Step 1: Shut Off the Water

This is always the first move. Find the shut-off valve closest to the problem. For a single fixture (toilet, sink, washing machine), there's usually a valve behind or beneath it. For a burst pipe or unknown source, go straight to the main shut-off — typically near the water meter at the street, or where the main line enters the house.

Step 2: Turn Off the Water Heater

If you've shut off the main water supply, turn off your water heater too — gas or electric. Running the burner or heating element without water flow can damage the unit or create a safety hazard.

Step 3: Open Faucets to Drain Remaining Pressure

After shutting off the main, open a few faucets on the lowest level of the home to relieve pressure in the pipes and drain residual water away from the problem area.

Step 4: Contain the Water

Grab towels, mops, buckets — whatever you have. Move valuables, electronics, and furniture off wet floors. If water is near electrical outlets or panels, stay clear and turn off the circuit breaker for that area (from a dry location).
